In-Depth Scholarship Details
Since its establishment in 1985, the Getty Scholars Program has welcomed nearly 1,500 residential scholars from over fifty countries. These scholars conduct research related to the annual theme while residing in Los Angeles. The selected projects span various geographical regions and time periods, ranging from ancient to contemporary eras.
The program receives a high volume of applications each year, ranging from 300 to 400. From these applications, approximately twenty fellowships are awarded annually.
Applicants for the Scholar Grant should have obtained a PhD before September 1, 2020. However, individuals from associated fields who possess equivalent professional experience but lack a PhD will also be considered.
Applicants who completed their degree after September 1, 2020 should apply for a Postdoctoral Fellowship instead.
Scholarship Duration and Reward
Scholar Grant recipients at the Getty Center can enjoy a residency period ranging from three to nine months. The program offers varying stipends based on the duration of the residency:
- Three-month residency: September–December/January–March; $21,500 stipend
- Six-month residency: September–March/January–June; $43,000 stipend
- Nine-month residency: September–June; $65,000 stipend
It’s important to note that AAAHI Fellowships are limited to nine-month residencies and provide established scholars with a stipend of $65,000. For doctoral candidates and recent PhD recipients, the Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships page contains information on AAAHI Fellowship stipends.
Interested applicants need to complete and submit the online Getty Scholar Grant application form before the specified deadline. The application requires the following attachments:
- Project Proposal (not to exceed five pages, typed and double-spaced): This should include a comprehensive description of the applicant’s proposed plan of study. The description should address two key aspects:
- How the project aligns with the annual theme.
- How the project would benefit from the Getty’s resources, including its library and collections.
Note: Applicants for the AAAHI Fellowship are exempt from addressing the annual theme. Instead, they should focus on describing how their projects will contribute to new knowledge in the field of African American art history.
